Now we don’t mean to scare you, but anyone in the UK can claim they’re an accountant. And we mean anyone. Including your friend who’s really bad at maths, because the term ‘accountant’ isn’t regulated like the term ‘doctor’ or ‘solicitor’ is.
The good news is there are things in place to ensure you aren’t hiring just anyone to be your accountant – and this guide will help! Here’s a few things to check before you hire an accountant.
Do they have any qualifications?
The term ‘accountant’ may not be regulated, but job titles such as ‘Chartered Accountant’ are. So, if you see job titles such as:
- Chartered Certified Accountant
- Chartered Accountant (England, Wales and Ireland)
- Chartered Accountant (Scotland)
- Chartered Tax Advisor
- Accounting Technician
- Chartered Management Accountant
They should be qualified accountants. Each title means something different, so you can read more about these in our article about accounting qualifications.
What are their reviews like?
This is an important one – how do their clients feel about their services? Whether you’re thinking about choosing an independent accountant or an accountancy firm, seeing what their clients have to say is important. You know they’re the real deal if they have a portfolio of happy customers!
Can my friend just do my accounts for me?
Yes, it’s perfectly fine to use a friend or family member as your accountant – if you feel comfortable doing so. It’s important to note though, your accounts are still your responsibility, even if someone else files your tax returns for you. Any penalties you incur are on you.
This is also the case if you hire an actual accountant, but the odds of this happening are much lower if you choose someone who is qualified and experienced!
